In the 1970s and 80s in Alaska, I did 30-some editions of woodcuts, more than 100 small etchings and a dozen lithographs. Now, in Florida, my interest in fine prints is being revived. -- sg

Hatcher Pass, Wet Gulch is an original fine print, not a reproduction. Image drawn under a magnifying glass directly on ball-grained offset lithography aluminum plate with hard #5 lithograph pencils.

To make the softly textured paper more receptive to this delicate image, the paper was calendered (flattened) with two passes through a hand-operated lithograph press. The aluminum plate was processed in the traditional manner by the artist at Visual Arts Center of Alaska.

The edition was printed on a Heidleburg offset lithography press at Van Cleve Printing in Anchorage, resulting in an extremely delicately printed image, with "just a kiss of ink" -- as described by artist/printmaker Matthew Sugarman.

A view in Chugach State Park along Turnagain Arm south of Anchorage, Alaska. Some rugged rock along there. A favorite place for hikes and picnics, and sheep, mountain goats (sometimes), moose and bears.

The image was drawn on a white marble lithograph stone, the ochre background color was printed from an aluminum litho plate. All work, and editioning, was done at the Visual Arts Center of Alaska in 1978, during which time I was employed as Printmaking Studio Manager. -sg
